On the 15th of October the is having an open day but just in case you can't make it (or are reading this article a little too late) I want to give you an idea about what to expect from some of their wonderful yoga classes .

But before giving you a break down of each class, there is some important information you need to know. ASMY is situated in the heart of West End, and thus is the perfect place to visit before or after work if you work in Brisbane's centre. We actually work on the far south of town, which was fine too because there are lots of classes later in the evening, and many on the weekend which we were able to couple with lunch in one of the many nearby cafes or a walk through Southbank.

Casual classes are $15 (or $10 for students) however you can buy class passes, which drop the price significantly. Plus you don't need to book; you can just rock up and give your chosen class a go. For more information about the price break down, have a look here .

It is probably good to know that each class ends in a bit of chanting, which can be unusual if you've never experienced it before. My hubby got the giggles the first time we heard it but it didn't take long for me to realize how special these chants are; plus they sound incredibly beautiful when the whole class has joined in.

Easy
We hadn't done Yoga in a while before we were invited to ASMY so we decided to start easy with Helen's Saturday class, and found it was the perfect place to begin. The class was simple enough, and we were able to follow the instructions with ease. Helen gave a wonderful easy-to-follow description of each move and she often left her perch and came on over to help us get the pose exactly right. Now just because it was easy, didn't mean I didn't feel the stretch. Helen was very adept at giving participants various levels to try in each pose, so in the ones that just came naturally I was able to step it up a notch and truly gain the benefits of yoga.

Flow
On Monday morning we gave Omniya's Flow class a go. Now this is a slightly more challenging class than the first three but is still most definitely doable for beginners. Omniya was very caring and you could tell she was very concerned for our safety and comfort. She gave a few tips on how to look after your knees in yoga, which I had never heard before, but were extremely grateful to learn. This class moved rather quickly but as a result, I found it easier than normal to get my breath in alignment with my moves. You may need to go to a few of the other classes to learn the names of each of poses, as you do move through them quickly, but because the flow moves in repeated cycles, after a few rounds it is easy to keep up. I did find myself really working hard in this class and often took the opportunity to rest in child's pose, as did most of the other participants.

Yin
Yin with the talented Yasi, was one of the most unusual but incredible yoga classes I've ever done. Yasi moved us through a series of poses that we held for a long 3-5mins. Each pose had various levels and the aim was to pick the one you were comfortable in, because you needed to hold it, in silence and complete stillness, for the whole time (although you were encouraged to move to an easier level if it began to hurt). This class is definitely worth a go, even if it is just because you want to try something different.

Yin Yang
Gayatris' Ying Yang class was a wonderful combination of the Yin and Flow classes. The first 30mins were Yin-like and required participants to hold each pose for a longer period of time, and then we switched to flowing our way through a series of movements. This was probably my favourite class because it gave you the best of both yoga-worlds.

ASMY also offers Hatha and Gentle classes for when you are just starting out, as well as Power Vinyasa and Energy classes for those with a bit more practice time under the belts. Regardless of which classes you picky will feel extremely welcomed by the staff and the students at Australian School Of Meditation and Yoga.
