Event:
Hear their words hit & have your say on which poet slays

"Raw and witty, vulnerable and downright gritty": this is how Australian Poetry Slam describes the voices of Australia's best wordsmiths, but which wordsmith will be crowned the country's national poetry slam champion for 2021?

Hear these incredible outspoken humans pour out their prose and help decide the national winner by attending and voting in Victoria's state final online event.

Featuring the winners and runner-ups from the regional and metro Victorian heats, the 2021 Australian Poetry Slam Victorian State Final will decide the overall winner of the state competition.

The winner and runner-up will then both go on to compete at the national final, which is being held at the Sydney Opera House, to become Australia's 2021 poetry slam champion.

Register for a free ticket and tune in to listen online, let the competing poets' words wash over you, soothe your soul, ignite your passion and/or draw out tears of lament and laughter, and help decide who should take their spoken word to the national final.

The audience is being tasked with judging the state finalists, as well as cheering them on "as they speak, scream, howl, whisper or even sing their poems, stories, lyrics or monologues in this electric live event".

This year's event, which is run by the State Library of Victoria, is being hosted by Ren Alessandra, who is a poet and creative mentor based in Melbourne. Ren Alessandra was crowned the 2020 Australian Poetry Slam Champion at the National Final, which was held live online as the closing event of Story Week 2020. Her work explores her relationship with her femininity and her journey into self-discovery.

During the event, the performing writers will each have just two minutes to capture the online audience and secure your vote. The audiences at these finals will then choose the two powerful wordsmiths to compete in the Australian Poetry Slam National Final.

The winner of the National Final will be awarded a prize pack worth $10,000 that includes publication in audio, video and print, a number of paid gigs in 2022, and professional mentoring.
