Australian Heritage Week 2015 is a national celebration of our cultural and built heritage, running from Saturday April 11 until Sunday April 19. It is not connected with the About Time History Festival run by History SA in May, or the National Trust Heritage Festival which is held over the duration of both festivals.

National Trust SA is holding a range of Australian Heritage Week Adelaide things to do with a wide appeal for all ages. We'll look at some of the highlights in this article.

Victoriana: Old Fashioned Day of Play
This will be full of fun things to do for kids - a chance for nature play in the leafy grounds of beautiful Beaumont House.

Both the young and young-at-heart are invited to take part in this fun and interactive day - try favourite childhood games from years gone by. Why not challenge a friend to a croquet match or a game of marbles? Or try your hand at quoits, hoop and stick, or knucklebones. The Victoriana Society will also be on hand to teach parlour games from the past if you weren't around in those days.

Other activities for kids include a petting zoo with baby farm animals including goats, chickens, lambs, and rabbits. Children just love to give them a feed and a cuddle. In the laundry children can roll up their sleeves and try washing clothes the 19th century way. Live music performances with dance and storytelling from long ago will entertain all the family. Food stalls will tempt you after a vigorous round of games, and Devonshire tea will also be available.

Afterwards relax and take in the beautiful garden and grounds of Beaumont House. Built in 1849, this heritage listed residence has been the home of a number of well-known South Australians including the first Anglican Bishop of Adelaide, Bishop Augustus Short, and later South Australian politician, Sir Samuel Davenport. (Adults $5, children $2).

Cold Case: Somerton Man Mystery
The mystery of the Somerton Man has been puzzling South Australians for decades. Also known as the Taman Shud case , the mystery concerns the unsolved case of a body found at Somerton Beach in 1948. For this special Australian Heritage Week free event come and hear a panel of experts discuss Adelaide's most famous cold case. Hosted by National Trust SA, this is a free event but bookings are essential .

A Walk on the Dark Side of Adelaide's History
Adelaide has a dark and seedy side that few are aware of. You can learn more by following some walking trails in Adelaide , but there is another way. Join this walking tour and unearth the dark secrets that lurk not far beneath the surface of our history. Will you see the scariest place in Adelaide ? Take the tour to find out!

Bookings and more information here . ($25 per person, run by Adelaide's Haunted Horizons for the National Trust SA for Australian Heritage Week).

Silent witnesses: Stories of the statues
There are many statues and monuments scattered around the Adelaide's parklands - have you ever wondered about them?

Enjoy a public talk and guided walk from Simon Cameron's Silent Witnesses, one of the free Australian Heritage Week Adelaide events. Celebrate the International Day of Monuments and Sites with this walk starting at Ayers House.

%%For more details about these events and other things to do in the Australian Heritage Week program in South Australia see the National Trust SA website . There are a total of ten events currently listed. Unfortunately the Australian Heritage Week website does not seem to have any SA listings at time of writing.

The About Time History Festival program has also now been released by History SA, and printed copies are available at public libraries and council offices.%%
