Choral Come and Try for Juniors
Brisbane City Hall in the 'Sixties

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve choral singing. There is no doubt that singing is a very uplifting experience, and I had plenty of those.

From age eight I was enjoying choral singing and competing in eisteddfodau with my primary school choir, but the greatest thrill of all was to be selected to sing with the Brisbane Eisteddfod Junior Choir from Year 7 to Year 12. That was over 50 years ago, but friendships and memories made then have lasted, with many members of the BEJC still singing together in their golden years. We reminisce about performing for presidents and princesses, being the first Australian choir to perform overseas (across the ditch to New Zealand admittedly), and travelling around Australia meeting many kind folk who billeted us in their homes.

Are these the sorts of memories you would like for your daughter? Similar opportunities are possible through membership of the well-known Australian Girls Choir. You will have seen and heard some of its members on a television advertisement for QANTAS. Scholarships are offered annually at awards nights. There are weekly rehearsals for national and international tours.

But how will you or she know whether choral singing is for her? On Saturday February 8 from 9.15am to 10.15am the AGC will hold a come and try session for girls aged 5 to 8. They will buddy up with experienced choristers to taste a range of activities such as singing, dancing and playing.

The major focus of the choir is to develop confidence and self esteem through music. No preparation is required, as there is no audition for the morning's activities. The founding philosophy of the choir is that every child can sing given the correct training opportunity and encouragement.

Venues for these open classes are:

Mt Gravatt High School, Creighton Street, Mt Gravatt (enter Creighton Street off Logan Road).

Aspley East State School, Helena Street, Aspley.

Brigidine College, corner Ward and Fairley Streets, Indooroopilly.

If you and your daughter decide that the AGC is for her, fees for the Piccolo Group (Preparatory and Grade One girls) are $630 per year.
