Imagine a premium mix of wines, beer, ciders and spirits, all in one place, with free samples, guest speakers, demonstrations and interesting seminars; not to mention a great selection of food and live entertainment. Well imagine no longer because this phenomenal vision is coming to life at the Royal Exhibition Building on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July 2016.
This is a rare opportunity to meet the brewers, distillers and winemakers face-to-face, learn more about their methods and products, while sampling their wares. Select a favourite, then take a bottle or two home and share or simply enjoy all over again.
Exhibitors will be serving beer, wine and cocktails from an array of pop up bars manned by some of the best bartenders Australia has to offer. The pop-up bars will be divided into four distinct sections, The Boutique Market, The Beer & Cider Zone, The Wine Village and The Tasting Den.
The Boutique Market will feature hundreds of premium wines alongside a mouth-watering selection of food and freshly brewed coffee. This is the hall where you can meet, learn, sample and buy.
The Beer & Cider Zone is reserved for craft beers and ciders. Brewers will walk you through their brewing process if you're interested, or simply relax with a cold one and enjoy the atmosphere. Special tutored tastings and beer talks are scheduled for The Beer & Cider Zone, with times and details available on the program on the
Australian Drinks Festival website.
Discover, compare or simply enjoy a range of different wine varietals in The Wine Village, then head to The Tasting Den for more wine related talks and tastings. Featured talks in The Tasting Den range from How to Launch a Microbrewery to Gins of the World to Best of Aussie Craft Spirits to a very mouth watering, Brandy & Chocolate – A Match Made in Heaven.
In addition to the four pop-up bar sections, you can swing past The Main Stage. Not only is this the ideal place to hang out if you're enjoying a drink with friends, it is also the place to catch local and International guests speaking about everything from ice carving displays to how to host a successful cocktail party. You never know what you'll learn.
Or make yourself comfortable in The Lounge. If you were thinking about opening your own distillery or would like to hear an expert give an Introduction to Mezcal, this is the place to be.
In all, there will be more than 40 free talks and demonstrations and the full program of events is already available on the
Australian Drinks Festival website.
Feeling a little bit hungry after all that walking around, sampling and learning? Then prepare for a mighty decision. Satisfy any sized craving in the Food Glorious Food section of the exhibit, but prepare to choose between items such as the Huxtaburger, Meatmother, Mammavan, Frencheese or Paco y Lola. There is also a wide range of snacks and deli items available in addition to heartier lunch meals, coffee and non-alcoholic drinks. Water will be provided free.
If you have ever wanted to distil your own gin, here's your chance. Book a session with William McHenry in the McHenry Distillery Gin Laboratory and he will teach you how to make your own gin, with the added bonus of being able to take your creation home with you. Plus, witness the firey art of barrel making courtesy of Peter Bignell from Belgrove Distillery. You will find him hard at work outside the eastern forecourt at 1.40pm and 3.40pm each day.
Purchase your tickets before 15th June for the Early Bird discounted price of $35. After the 15th tickets will be $50. People under 18 are admitted free, but must be accompanied by an adult. Also please note: The
Australian Drinks Festival is a cashless event. Festival currency must be used to redeem food and drinks and you can purchase festival currency either in advance or at the event.
The Australian Drinks Festival very sensibly starts at 12noon and runs until 7pm on Saturday 16th July, and 6pm on Sunday 17th July at the Royal Exhibition Building, located on Nicholson Street, Carlton Gardens next to the Melbourne Museum. There is parking at the museum and surrounding street or city parking. However, public transport might be the better option.
