Showcasing native plants in beautifully themed gardens

Previously a landfill for the regional city, this 22-hectare site now showcases native, rare and endangered plants in beautifully themed gardens. The Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton is not your traditional botanical experience. It consists of regenerated grassy bushland, wetlands and a 30-metre-high 'reclaimed tip' lookout offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape. There is also a variety of walking trails including the River and Billabong Walks.

Upon entry, you'll see the first of the themed gardens. The design of the Turtle Garden incorporates an indigenous reptile. Using recycled materials, crazy paving has become the reptile's shell, car tyres its neck and a rock its head. Any idea what this reptile might be? Take a seat on the bespoke benches and let your mind wander.

A few minutes down the path will lead you to the Weaving Garden where vegetation used in the Aboriginal craft of weaving has been planted. These plants can be harvested by weavers from the local art gallery for their work.

In the northeastern corner, a garden with bedspring cubby, interactive puzzles and sandpit will surely be much fun for the children. The recycled installations have been designed to provoke imagination and creativity. With seats overlooking the wetlands, you can relax and enjoy the view while the kids play.

For the energetic, a climb to the lookout is a must. It's the biggest drawcard and there's even a zig-zag path to assist you up the hill if you prefer. Otherwise, a meander through bushland along the River and Billabong Walks is nice too. Not many old greybox trees remain, but work is in progress to replace the plants through the 'one tree per child' program. A picnic shelter can be found at the start of the walk. Other facilities include a portable toilet and carpark. Development of the themed gardens and wetlands as well as more seating and shelters is continuing.
