Located just 25 kilometres west of Narrabri, the Australia Telescope Compact Array is a must-see for science lovers nationwide. It consists of six identical antennas with a width of 22 metres each. Five dishes sit, and move, along a rail track running east-west while the sixth is fixed further west. Together, they provide more detailed images than what a large dish could. These high-resolution radio pictures are used by astronomers to study the structure of the universe, stars, molecules, magnetic fields and so on.

An unstaffed visitors centre can be found onsite. From here, you can see some of the antennas depending on their configuration. You're welcome to walk around and have a look at the exhibition too. Unfortunately, the power was out when we visited so a couple of the exhibits including an audiovisual presentation could not be enjoyed. We had a fascinating time regardless.

Since beginning its operations in 1988, the Compact Array has become one of the most advanced radio telescopes in the world. More than 100 observing teams use it each year. If you're curious about science, then you'll surely be impressed by this place. Others though might find it a little underwhelming.

Opening hours are from 8am to 5pm and entry is free. The address is 1828 Yarrie Lake Road Narrabri. Please switch your phones off before arriving as they can interfere with the detection of signals. For more information, head to www.csiro.au .
