Myer, the department store, has launched a campaign called
Australia Lives Here . As part of this campaign, there is an exhibition of items sold between 1900 and 2000 which brought with them societal, household and family changes for most Australians. The first TV from 1956, the first vacuum cleaner, a pocket watch, the original Barbie - there are many items that will take you on a trip down memory lane. The items and history of each decade are presented through print, digital and social media, as well as through the products themselves.
There will be fashion and beloved toys and appliances from yesteryear. Plus, a few "what were we thinking?" moments. Items that now bring out laughter and embarrassment if we actually owned one of those.
However, rather than just encouraging nostalgia, the items have been placed alongside their modern equivalents, for example, Fitbit as the new watch and drones as the new plane toys, to show the progress that has been made and how these new items are changing our way of life.
As part of an interactive exhibition, Myer is seeking your help. They are still missing a few items that they would like to put on display. If you have any of the items they are seeking, you could win a prize - a 2017 equivalent of the item you provide.
30 items on the exhibition list are missing and Myer is calling on people who have these items to submit their story. To see the list of items, find out more about the campaign or enter a submission go to
australialiveshere.myer.com.au .
From 8 August - 15 September the interactive exhibition at Myer's iconic Bourke Street store in Melbourne will enable you to relive the history through these items and trends associated with each decade between 1900 and 2000.
