Australia Day 2017 - Wollongong Harbour

Wollongong City Council put on an all day all ages event by Wollongong Harbour. The day kicks off at 8am with the Aquathon and Community Walk, which finishes around 11:30am. The longest event in the Aquathon is a 900m swim in the Harbour with a 7km run.



There a wide range of food, fashion and nick knack stalls as well as rides. The food stalls include gozleme, sausage sizzles, Lebanese, pizza, deli and a tonne of others. The rides are split in two with the little rides in Osborne Park where the McDonald's stage is. The other in Lang Park near the Telstra main stage. The other random rides they have is laser skirmish and a silent disco.

The have entertainment on the Telstra stage and McDonald's stage from 12pm till 8pm. There is live broadcasting by Wave FM over near the fish market where they host a sand sculpture competition and i98fm street fleet set up in Lang Park for some fun in the sun.



They usually have a small train that takes you around the main
areas. The also a have a vintage car display.

The major events for the day are the citizenship ceremony, the sand sculpture competition, the firing of the cannons and of course the fireworks at 9pm. The gun battery march and firing of the cannons are re-enacted by the Rotary club where they march with the brass band from the old court house up to the cannons on cliff road. They light both cannons several times and then it is over. It is pretty cool.



Of course on a hot day, this event is amazing as you are at the beach and can set up a picnic anywhere you like. The downfall is parking. But never fear, you can park at Vikings oval and catch the free shuttle bus into the entertainment centre. Or just park a mile away and walk - the option is yours.
