It's the middle of summer and Australia Day is usually one of the hottest days on the calendar in Sydney, so what better way to enjoy the festivities of this holiday than to be in and around the water? Several councils and swim centres are putting on pool parties that won't have the kids complaining and, at the same time, won't break your wallet. Here's what I've found -
Canterbury Council Outside of the city, temperatures soar higher and past years have seen many turning out to join in the fun at pools in this south-west council area. This year sees a range of family-friendly entertainment at four leisure and aquatic centres - Canterbury, Roselands, Birrong and Revesby.



Enjoy a free sausage sizzle, Indigenous performances, a live DJ spinning tunes, children's activities and an inflatable slip 'n' slide at each centre, from 10am-4pm. Entry on arrival is $2 per person. Northern Beaches Council Start the day early with a splash from 9am in Manly and Warringah, with aquatic centres featuring large pool inflatables, diving boards, a DJ and entertainment. Running for 3hrs, there's free entry at these two locations:-Manly Aquatic Centre - Kenneth Rd, Manly ValeWarringah Aquatic Centre - 1 Aquatic Drv, Frenchs ForestAfterwards, head to a nearby beach for sand, sun, surf and water activities. Plenty of shops and dining options abound around beaches, especially at Manly and Dee Why, to satisfy your taste buds when hunger sets in.

Bayside Council
A day of live music, Indigenous dance, didgeridoo performances and craft, along with inflatable water slides and water activities, is what you'll find at Botany Aquatic Centre in Sydney's south-east, from 10am-3pm. There's also a huge green space with picnic tables and four barbecues that can be used on a first-in, first-served basis or you can bring your own portable barbecue to the centre. Entry is $7 per adult and $4.90 per child at this centre located on Cnr Myrtle & Jasmine Sts, Botany.

Sutherland Shire Council Three locations in the shire are putting on pool parties this Australia Day, that see special activations and a DJ from 10am-2pm. They are:- Caringbah Leisure Centre - 5-9 Jacaranda Rd, CaringbahEngadine Leisure Centre - 111-113 Anzac Ave, EngadineSutherland Leisure Centre - 1 Rawson Ave, SutherlandEntry is free.After a few dips, head over to Cronulla Beach for a free concert (beginning 4pm) featuring headline performers Sheppard, together with Samantha Jade, locals Caravana Sun, Jess and Matt, and the Royal Australian Navy. Following the concert at 9pm is a spectacular firework display that will light up the night sky over the beach, providing a wonderful end to the day.

Ku-ring-gai Council If you're sleeping in on the holiday, then this afternoon pool party at Ku-ring-gai Aquatic & Fitness Centre will suit you. From 1pm, there's a barbecue, face painting, free entertainment, music and giveaways. The centre boasts indoor and outdoor pools, along with a state-of-the-art gym. Entry on Australia Day is by gold coin donation for 4hrs of summer joy. You can find it on Prince of Wales Drive at West Pymble.

Parramatta CouncilAnother location throwing an Aussie sausage sizzle is Epping Aquatic Centre. From 11am-5pm, you can also enjoy the pool inflatable, whilst a DJ brings the beats.The centre has a large 6-lane 50m outdoor pool, as well as a covered play pool for toddlers, and a large seating stand.



General entry prices apply for this one (Adult $7.15, Child $5.30) which can be found at 26 Stanley Rd, Epping.These events in the suburbs are a great way to enjoy Australia Day, providing a more relaxed summer vibe without the enormous crowds you get in the city. If these council areas are not convenient to your location, then contact your local council to see if they have a similar event in your area.
