Host a Themed Australia Day Party

Go on, av-a-go-yer-mug
After hosting a successful Mexican themed New Year's Eve party, I've decided to give a themed Australia Day bash a fair go. If you're planning on hosting an Australia Day event why not make it as true blue Aussie as you can? Here are some suggestions.

Location - at home on the back deck is my preference but if you don't want to deal with the preparation and clean up, try a local park.

Invites - these days invitations are usually sent via social media, you can have fun creating your own e-invitation or create a free one online.

Costumes - come as your favourite Australian celebrity, character, animal or icon. Suggestions include Dame Edna, Steve Irwin, Kath and Kim, Ned Kelly, the Wiggles, a convict, cricketer or lifesaver, a redback spider or a jar of vegemite - I'm personally leaning towards Julia Gillard.

Decor - shops like Coles and Crazy Clarks stock Australiana decorations including flags, napkins, paper plates, cups, tablecloths and toothpicks (if you have the time you can order online from sites such as Souvenirs Australia). You can also adorn the table with a vase full of native flowers and plant pickings.

Food - you can go any number of ways when it comes to food depending on how many people are attending and your budget - casual barbecue style will be my choice. Suggestions for snacks include vegemite sandwiches, mini pies and sausage rolls, Nobbies nuts and a tropical fruit platter. Throw some snags, kangaroo steaks and onions on the barbie and serve with breadrolls and basic fresh salad items. Perhaps add a prawn and mango salad, or a beetroot and fetta salad to the mix. Or you may prefer to go with something simple like beer battered fish and chips.

For dessert try lamingtons, pavlova or a trifle using green and yellow jelly. Kids will enjoy frozen fruit cubes or have some store bought iceblocks on hand.

Beverages - you can make it BYO booze, or if it's within your budget offer a selection of Australian wines and beers. A tropical fruit punch will be a big hit on a hot day and can be made with Bundy Rum or without, for a non-alcoholic option. Mango Daiquiris and Champagne Cocktails will also go down a treat.

Entertainment - music fans can relax with Triple J's all day Hottest 100, or prepare a playlist of Aussie favourites such as John Farnham, INXS, Powderfinger, Kylie Minogue and Men at Work. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a game of cricket, while the less energetic may prefer a quiz, with questions on all things Australian and prizes for the winning team.

So give it a burl, enjoy yourself and have a beaut Australia Day.
