There are lots of places to celebrate Australia Day with special events on and Parramatta Park is a perennial favourite. Split into three sections, there is the Aerial Carnivale, the Big Backyard and DIG 1100 Concert with an NRMA Fireworks Spectacular.

The Aerial Carnivale starts at 6am with hot air balloon rides where you can reach for the clouds or watch the cololurful display from below. Whilst general entry is free, a balloon ride requires a ticket which can be purchased at the Riverside Theatre Box Office from 16 January.

On stage, a number of performers will show you how to hula hoop and whip crack whilst others will provide musical entertainment and a display of circus tricks. Aerial artists will twist and twirl whilst holding onto silk drapes. You can even learn some tricks in the aerial skills workshops or the Circus Works tent.

Have a hearty breakfast and then race off the calories through a boot camp or get pumped on some amusement rides. There are water tap stations available throughout the day for you to refill your bottles. It's important to keep hydrated on this typically hot summer's day.

This carnival section finishes at 11am and then the Big Backyard takes over until 6pm. A Big Backyard on Australia Day in Australia would not be Aussie if there wasn't a BBQ or food of that nature. This backyard does not disappoint and will have some of the best barbecued food from stalls and chefs who will be providing demonstrations and revealing some of their cooking secrets at the Taste Mobile Kitchen stage.

Children are well taken care of in the Backyard with lots of entertainment from Erth's Dinosaur Zoo and the Wiggles' Dorothy the Dinosaur, among others. A workshop zone will include arts and crafts, such as puppet making, and a wildlife display allows them to get up close with our native animals. A games precinct with sports activities will get them some exercise and more amusement rides will provide for screams of laughter.

Vintage cars on display, horse and cart rides, eco stalls and workshops, historical re-enactments, tours of Old Government House and Australiana demonstrations, such as wood chopping, round out what's on offer.

Come 6pm and it's time for the DIG 1100 concert featuring children's favourites The Wiggles as well as Timomatic and 2012 The Voice finalist, Sarah DeBono. Relax with a picnic or purchase some dinner from one of the food stalls as the sun sets on our national day.

If you haven't fallen asleep from the heat of the day then the fireworks finale at 9pm is set to dazzle you some more.

The map below shows the different sections and can be downloaded from the event website .

Have a memorable, safe and happy Australia Day.
