Celebrate Australia Day on the banks of the beautiful Hawkesbury River at Windsor with all the things you love about this country – the landscape, the food, the music – in the company of family and friends.

Governor Phillip Park is the place to set down your picnic blanket and chairs for this free event of live entertainment that sees Sydney cover band 'Let's Groove Tonight' performing, along with local acoustic musicians singing iconic Aussie songs, on the outdoor stage.

Giant water slides will keep you cool, carnival rides and jumping castles provide fun as do children's activities and games, craft will have the creative kids taken care of and roving entertainers will amuse young and old on this colourful day commemorating the anniversary of the First Fleet's arrival in 1788. Free face painting is available too.

A recently completed play space will also keep the kids occupied with its combination of nature-based play helping with coordination, sensory play with musical chimes and water play with a fountain and several spouts popping up from the ground. A sandstone fort with a slide, a fishnet climbing tunnel, bird nest swing and merry-go-round are just some of the play equipment, whilst scented gardens, a stone lizard and cicada sculptures add further interest.

Food and drink stalls plus food trucks will satisfy your hunger. Pizza-ology will be there as will G-Dup Burgers, Grilled Gourmet, Tapas Market, The King and his Q smoking up brisket and ribs, Crosdales BBQ and Turkish gozleme for your savoury needs, whilst sweet delights come from Airy Fairys fairy floss and snocones, Aldo's coffee and gelato van, Mini Melts ice cream, Mini Donuts, Mr Ricky soft serve ice cream and Sugar Wheels with fried Oreos and sweet burgers that include the Gaytime and the Unicorn. No BYO alcohol is allowed. Instead, it can be purchased at the event from the likes of Casey's Beer and Hillbilly Cider.

Hosted by Hawkesbury City Council , it's all on from 4pm-9pm, with a special appearance by the RAAF Base Striker Fire Truck between 6-8pm and fireworks on the river at 9pm.

Located in George Street, there's onsite parking and street parking as well as BBQ's, picnic tables and benches, toilets, walking and cycle paths, and large grassy areas.

But that's not all. Nearby, the Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler will be running two cruises on Australia Day – a lunch cruise (12-3pm) and a dinner cruise (6-9pm). The 3hr cruises include a buffet of seafood, chicken, cold meats, salads, desserts, tea and coffee, along with music from the Little Black Ducks performing live. The evening cruise also takes in the fireworks on the river at Governor Phillip Park. Departing from Windsor Wharf, the cost for each cruise is $60 per adult ($55 for seniors) and $30 for children (3-13yrs). Bookings are essential by phoning 0401 798 088.

Note, that due to poor reception on parts of the river, the licensed bar only accepts cash.

You can easily combine either of these cruises with the event in the park. The dinner cruise, in particular, would be a great way to relax after a couple of hours of activity.

Whatever you do on this national day, be sure to slip, slop and slap as it is always a hot one.

Happy Birthday Australia!
