If you’re looking for something a bit different this Australia Day, then this scenic train ride may be just up your alley.
With the special diesel-hauled Kiama Picnic Train, you’ll enjoy a day trip from Sydney that takes you through the serene Royal National Park to the South Coast and the beautiful seaside town of Kiama where you’ll have plenty of time for lunch, joining in Australia Day festivities around Kiama Harbour, taking a walk up the famous Kiama Blowhole, relaxing at the surf beach, browsing the many shops and admiring the charms of this picturesque area.
The train itself is a live museum on rails with all its history and the heritage carriages making the signature journey a comfortable one as you enjoy the spectacular views of the coastline along the way. You can choose from private compartments for large groups, classic seating for four and single seats, amongst others. Some include tables, whilst others don’t.
A buffet car will be available for light snacks and drinks (including alcohol) or you can bring your own picnic hamper & BYO alcohol. Note that large eskies are not permitted due to storage constraints. If you’re wanting lunch in Kiama, you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and bars, although you’ll need to book a place ahead to avoid disappointment. Australia Day is usually busy wherever you go.
You can board this wonderful ride in Sydney from Tempe (Dep 9.40am) or Sutherland (Dep 10.25am) and further south in Wollongong (Dep 11.30am), arriving in Kiama at 12.35pm. The return journey leaves Kiama at 4.20pm. Times are indicative, with final times sent via email the week of the journey.
Ticket prices vary depending on the number of people. A single ticket for one person is $110, whilst a 4-seater booth is $360 per group and a private compartment (maximum of 8 people) is $500 per group. The more people you have, the more you save. All fares are for same-day return travel. Bookings are through
Trybooking . Be sure to get in quick, as some carriages are already sold out.
So leave the Sydney suburbs behind for a day full of moments you’ll be cherishing long after the journey is over. An
online shop is also available for you to purchase some special memorabilia to remember your time on the Picnic Train.
