It's almost the end of the holidays but the end of summer fun is nowhere in sight. Last year a reader commented to me they looked on WeekendNotes on Australia Day as they wanted to take the kids out somewhere, but couldn't find anything to do. There are loads of fun ideas here on Weekend Notes but for some more specific on the day, here are some venues and ideas for the kids to enjoy this Australia Day in the suburbs of Adelaide.

AUSTRALIA DAY BUSH FAIR
Thursday 26 January, 5.30-9.30pm
Venue- South Adelaide Football Club Oval
Noarlunga Downs

Only a gold coin entry with free car parking, this will be a fabulous fun family day out. Mayor Rosenberg will present the Australia Day Awards for citizen, young citizen and community event of the year. Bring your Aussie Day picnic or purchase from a variety of stalls offering local food, refreshments, and wares.

Entertainment will include live music, market stalls, pony rides, native animals, mini train rides, a rock climbing wall, wood chopping and Aussie style displays. Fun for the kids with roving children's acts, face painting and games for the kids. Families will love the Bush Fair as it is a family focused event, Say hello to special guest MC, TV and radio personality Cosi.

The celebrations will culminate with a with a spectacular fireworks display synchronised to music. Of course, this is dependent on the weather.

CIVIC PARK AUSDAY
Thursday 26th January 10am-3pm
Venue- Civic Park, North East Road, Modbury.

If you are in the north-east your kids will have a hoot at this brand new event for the summer. This all free event is provided by the City of Tee Tree Gully and will feature a huge 100 metre two lane water slide. Bring your own inflatable toy to help you slide down. They will have some there but I imagine delays getting them back to the top. The queues will be long so take the sunblock, a rashy top and hat for the kids.

As kids only over one metre in height will be allowed on the slide some smaller wet and dry bouncy castles will be provided for the younger kids. There will also be food trucks and an essential sausage sizzle. Sounds like an ideal Australia day with fun, water, games and snags. For more information see here

AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS AT ELIZABETH
26th January 8am- 12noon
Venue- Freemont Park Elizabeth
For families up in the northern suburbs the City of Playford will once again hold their annual Australia Day celebration.
Celebrate Australia Day 2017 with the City of Playford at Fremont Park, Elizabeth on Thursday 26 January from 8am-12pm.

The free community event will feature live entertainment for all ages, rides, kids activities and a free BBQ breakfast.
The event will also feature the announcement of the winners of the 2017 Australia Day Awards. There is more car parking towards the rear of this park. You can also get the train and walk across past the shopping mall.

SPORTING EVENTS
Older kids and teens may enjoy a sporting event for the day.
VICTORIA BITTER ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL SERIES: AUSTRALIA V PAKISTAN
January 26th Match starts at 1.50pm
Venue- Adelaide Oval

HENLEY TO GRANGE JETTIES SWIM
This annual event has been on for rover 100 years now. You need to be over 18 years to enter the swim race. Registrations start at 8 am. Kids may like to head to the sea and cheer on the competitors and then have a swim in the sea afterwards. It would be a fun venue for a family beach picnic. But good luck finding a car park.

LOCAL POOL PARTY
Many suburban swimming pools have pool parties for kids on Australia Day. These are great for teenagers who want to have their own fun. Search your council or local pool and see if they have something planned.

LOCAL COUNCIL AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS
Almost all councils hold an early morning breakfast t a local park. These are also held in regional towns. Awards are given to persons in the community who have been honoured for their contributions.

FIREWORKS DISPLAYS
Fireworks will be on in the city at Elder Park, at the Bush Fair at Noarlunga as mentioned above and also at Semaphore. The Semaphore Summer Carnival will continue all day with fireworks on Australia Day at 9.30pm. The area will be a dry zone from midday.

If none of these suit or you don't think you can cope with the crowds, how about start your own Australia Day traditions at home. Try some Aussie cooking like pavlova or lamingtons, and invite everyone over for a big Aussie BBQ. The kids will love it either way.
