Australia Day is a fabulous day, one to celebrate the fantastic country we're lucky enough to live in. Call me biased if you will, but Australia is simply the best country in the world. While the great Aussie barbie is a favourite Australia Day tradition, did you know the government puts on a whole array of fun, family-friendly events all over the country – most of which are free?

Well, it does. The program, which includes more traditional events as well as those simply for fun and frivolity, seems to get bigger and bigger each year.

Already planned your barbie for Tuesday the 26th? Not to worry. While many of the events fall on the actual day, many are also running in the lead up. (And there is a public barbie on if Australia Day simply ain't Australia Day without a sausage in bread – see below).

Check out the Melbourne program for things happening in and around the CDB.

There are, just to mention a few, aerial acrobatic displays, fairy antics in the Fitzroy Gardens, all sorts of music events, indigenous dance performances, environmental events, and racing at Caulfield.

See the best of Bollywood on Saturday, where you too will have the opportunity to get your hips gyrating. See what clever Mr Sandman can sculpt out of 20 tonnes of sand at Docklands on Sunday.

On Tuesday, look for me in the crowd at the People's March down Swanston Street, where I'll be soaking up some community pride and good cheer.

Once I've worked up an appetite, it's off to a sausage sizzle to end all sausage sizzles in Kings Domain, with all proceeds going to support struggling farmers. Good! I'll then see the day out with a bang with some fabulous fireworks in and around Federation Square at 9.15pm.

For those who live a little further out or in the country, you can see what's on in your particular area by checking out the Victorian program. It's also packed full of things to see, do and enjoy all over the state.

By the way, there are some basic rules to observe if you want to fly the Australian flag. Did you know, for instance, that you mustn't let the flag lie or fall on the ground? It makes sense if you think about it, but I'd never really stopped to think about it. Well, there you go. There's more interesting information, along with other basic rules of respect, here.

Australia Day is a good reminder to celebrate our blessings. We humans are very good at focussing on the negative. Here's to celebrating what we have – not bemoaning what we don't. As the website states:

"Australia Day is a day for people from every walk of life to celebrate the things we love about our country. It is a time to celebrate our freedom – as individuals and as a nation; our lifestyle and culture; our land and its beauty, across beaches, forests, and the outback; our history and Indigenous past; and our opportunities and future."

Well, you really can't complain about that.
