Australia Day 2016 will be a day to remember with several events around the Capital to enjoy with the community. It is a day to don the Aussie flag and have a great day out with your mates in Canberra, starting the night before...
January 25th - Parliament House On the Eve of Australia Day, there will be the Australian of the Year Awards and Concert, held on the lawns of Parliament House. This event draws thousands to Capital Hill and will also feature Jimmy Barnes, Samantha Jade, Nathanial and Cyrus in the Concert throughout the night. See here for more details.
On Australia Day, get in early for the free Great Aussie Breakfast at 7:30am at Stage 88 at Commonwealth Park. At 9am the festivities begin with family entertainment to enjoy for all ages. A "Dinosaur Train" will be chugging along for pre-schoolers and there will be dinosaur themed shows on Stage 88 from 9:30am to learn about natural science, natural history and palaeontology. There will be food, rides and live entertainment to enjoy at this community event. At 10am walk down to Rond Terrace on the water for The National Flag Raising, before the Australian Citizenship Ceremony at 10:30am. At midday, local band Los Docos will be playing on Stage 88 and will open with the national anthem for the Salute to Nation. See here for more details.
After midday, spend the afternoon by the lake and enjoy watching the boats race in the Australia Day Regatta. See more information here.
Australia Day at the National Film and Sound Archive At the National Film and Sound Archives, enjoy an Aussie BBQ in the courtyard whilst listening to the Triple J Hottest 100 Countdown. Tickets cost $5 to see Aussie classics Crocodile Dundee, The Castle and They're a Weird Mob in the movie theatre. There will be free screenings of Skippy throughout the day and in the evening there will be a screening of Aussie movie Starstruck. See details here.
Australia Day - CBR Hottest 100 Beach Party Get out the boardies and beach towel and join the beach party at Westside Acton Park this Australia Day. There will be blow up pools to lounge in, a mammoth waterslide to slide down and sand to feel between your toes whilst listening to Triple J's Hottest 100. Enjoy the delicious food from the food vans at this unique shipping container village on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. See details here.

The National Museum of Australia will be holding an Australia Day Festival between 10am - 2pm. With the "Encounters" exhibition currently on display (see more information here), the day will celebrate the traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. There will be dance performances, talks, singers, a puppet show and more. See here for more information.
The Fireworks Spectacular will be over the skies in the evening, so head on down to Lake Burley Griffin to watch the fireworks at 9pm. The best places to view the fireworks will be from Regatta Point, the lawns of the National Library or Rond Terrace. For more information see the Australia Day website closer to the date.
Southern Cross Cruises will also be hosting a Cocktail Cruise with dinner on board the MV Southern Cross to watch the fireworks. See here for more details.
Australia Day in Canberra will a day of community, national pride and celebration. Join fellow Canberrans and Australians in getting together and coming together as one. Most of the celebrations will be happening around Lake Burley Griffin, so whilst down on the shores, why not stroll past plaques of the previous recipients of the Australian of the Year Awards and see where the 2016 recipients will be added (see here for more details).
