Australia Day. A day for celebrating all that is Australia. Sunshine, friends, family, food and drink, good times and. …cockroaches??

For a family day out, the place to be is South Bank Parklands. The day starts at 11am in the Cultural Forecourt with the official flag raising ceremony. The Australian Defence Force Triservice Honour Guard will provide a 21-gun salute and The Royal Artillery Band will provide the music.

After the raising of the Australian, Queensland, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders flags, an F111 jet will perform a fly over which is guaranteed to impress the kids.

For the rest of the day, South Bank Parklands will host a stack of free events for the whole family including music, art workshops, magic and a circus.

There will also be a multi-faith ceremony highlighting Australia's diversity of culture and faith.

From 4:30, the focused turns to music with a number of homegrown bands taking to the stage including Omni Anti, The John Steel Singers and Hungry Kids of Hungary.

To cap off proceedings there will be a fireworks display.

For a more educational Australia Day, take a guided tour of Government House and learn about Queensland's Governors of past and present.

Government House is situated in picturesque surroundings and guided tours of the gardens are available.

The Victoria Barracks Historical Society will also be firing their cannon.

For a more laid back alternative, grab some mates, a portable BBQ, a stereo and a cricket set, then head down to New Farm Park.

For many Brisbanites, the only way to celebrate Australia Day is with a BBQ and a game of cricket in the park whilst listening to Triple J's Hottest 100 before spending the rest of the afternoon arguing about the results. If you arrive early enough you may even be able to grab the use of one of the parks coin operated barbeques.

If you're looking for something a little less traditional then The Story Bridge Hotel is the place for you. The Annual Cockroach Race is now into it's 29th year and is as popular as ever.

Bring your own cockroach or buy one from the "stables" for $5.00.

Heaps of other entertainment will be provided and the day promises to be as enjoyable as ever.

Whatever you decide to do, you won't be disappointed with the variety of options.

Happy Australia Day!
