The list below features all the top Australia Day FREE events happening across Sydney and surrounds. There will be barbecues, sports events, performances and more.

1. 185th Australia Day Regatta
Time: From 1:30 am
Where: Sydney Harbour, Sydney
Details: A race for the ages, a race where vessels are big, small, new and old. This Australia Day event started in 1837, and is the world's oldest annual sailing event! It features over 100 boats racing in Sydney Harbour in events for all yachts and 18ft skiffs classes.

2. Wheelchair Sport's GIO Oz Day
Time: From 7 am
Where: George St, The Rocks
Details: The 32nd Wheelchair Sport's GIO Oz Day will feature Australian athletes (Elite and amateur) tackling 10kms racecourse which will feature three 3.3km loops along the streets in The Rocks and Barangaroo precincts.
Vantage points will include outside the Museum of Contemporary Art, George St in The Rocks and Hickson Road.

3. WugulOra Morning Ceremony
Time: From 7:45am
Where: Online via Australia Day Facebook page or ABC TV.
Details: Connect with the world's oldest living culture by watching the WugulOra Morning Ceremony live on ABC TV or via the official Australia Day Facebook page.
There will be performances by the Gadigal people of the Eora nation with an ancient Smoking Ceremony, dance, music and language performances by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancers and singers including the Koomurri Aboriginal Dance Troupe.

4. Australia Day Picnic
Time: From 9am.
Where: The Canopy, 2 Rosenthal Ave, Lane Cove
Details: This celebration will feature a unique program of local live music and film screenings. There will be crowd favourites including runners up of from The X Factor Australia 2015, couple-duo Jess & Matt, Phonic Duo, Tambourine Bay Wind Symphony, and Cameraygal Wind Symphony.
Aussie movies will include Paper Planes and The Sapphires.

5. Australia Day in Darling Harbour
Time: From 9am
Where: Darling Harbour
Details: There will be a wide range of free family-friendly entertainment, including roving performers, iconic Australian movie screenings, classic Aussie games in the park, five giant inflatable waterslides, epic BBQ courtesy of Braza, DJ entertainment, and more.

6. Willoughby Australia Day Celebrations 2021
Time: From 9:30am
Where: The Concourse, 409 Victoria Ave, Chatswood or Online.
Details: Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney and Councillors of Willoughby City will be welcoming new citizens to Willoughby. There will be speeches from Australia Day ambassador Ms Amelia Farrugia, congratulating award winners, including the Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year. The event will also include live performances from the Willoughby Band and local choir.

7. Rotary Club of Camden's Equestrian Park BBQ
Time: From 12pm
Where: 31 Cawdor Rd, Camden
Details: This free BBQ event is for the homeless and less fortunate from the Camden and Campbelltown communities. There will be a BBQ lunch.

8. Australia Day Address
Time: From 12pm
Where: Online
Details: The Address, first delivered in 1997, is a celebration of thought, diversity of opinion and freedom of speech. The event will include speakers who will also present inspiring and thought-provoking messages.

9. Australian Night at the Movies
Time: This event will be held on 21 January from 4:30pm
Where: Rhodes Foreshore Park, Shoreline Drive, Rhodes
Details: This family-friendly event will showcase an outdoor movie area and indoor markets. The movie program will include home-grown movies and iconic award-winning Australian film Bran Nue Dae. The markets will consist of stalls selling a wide range of goods as well as food trucks.

10. Salute to Australia
Time: From 2pm
Where: TV- ABC TV or iView from 2pm.
Details: This event will showcase a ceremony recognising and celebrating the contributions of many Australians and including a stirring 21-gun 'Salute to Australia' by the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force.

11. Ku-ring-gai's Australia Day Drive-In
Time: From 5:30pm
Where: St Ives Showground, 450 Mona Vale Rd, St Ives
Details: This free drive-in screening will feature the Aussie movie "Go". "Go" is a thrilling family-friendly movie about a boy who must overcome tremendous odds and his own recklessness to achieve his dream of winning the National Go-Kart Championships.

12. Greek Orthodox's Cultural Melodies
Time: From 7pm
Where: 118-132 Enmore Rd, Newtown
Details: This multicultural event will showcase a musical performance celebrating the history, dance and language across various genres and cultures.

13. Australia Day Live at Sydney Opera House
Time: From 7:30pm
Where: ABC TV or iView
Details: There will be a jam-packed program of unforgettable Aussie music icons including Delta Goodrem, Casey Donovan, Dami I'm, Mitch Tambo, Todd McKenney, world-renowned didgeridoo player William Barton, and more. Other entertainments include firework displays, yacht and jet-ski shows, and more.

14. Australia Day Celebrations
Time: From 8am to snags run out.
Where: Various locations including:

  • Eagle Farm Reserve, Eagle Vale
  • Ingleburn Reserve, Macquarie Fields
  • Rizal Park, Rosemeadow
  • Redfern Park, Minto
  • Dimeny Park, Claymore.

  • Details: The Campbelltown region will be offering free sausage sizzles and drink this Australia day.
