If you and the family are up for a day trip out of the city and suburbia, then load the car with hats and water bottles and head west for an Australia Day with a difference. A little over 90 minutes from the Brisbane CBD lies Drayton, an outer southwestern suburb on the edge of Toowoomba and the first substantial settlement on the Darling Downs.
What's happening at Drayton on Australia Day?
DownsSteam Tourist Railway & Museum is holding a day of fun activities and family entertainment at the Drayton Station and Railway Workshop at 16 Cambooya Street, Toowoomba. Some of the activities include a ceremonial flag raising, face painting, and live entertainment, and of course, there will be a variety of foods available for purchase such as:
Gourmet 'Aussie' Pies - Mash, Peas & Gravy
Train Pack' - Mixed Sandwiches, Scone, Jam & Cream
If you are a train buff, you will be in your element with the restored, historically significant locomotives and the unique Dreamtime art gallery carriage you will find simply mesmerising.
DownsSteam is run entirely by volunteers and is dedicated to the establishment of a tourist railway for Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. As a non-profit, volunteer-run, non-essential museum & hospitality venue operating on Queensland Rail property, they are required by the Queensland Government - Public Health and Social Measures linked to vaccination status direction to comply with the visitor and staff obligations for proof of vaccination status for entry requirements.
Gates open at 9 am on Wednesday, 26th of January, and close at 3pm with site entry by $5 donation per adult with all children free.
