Celebrate Australia Day in style
Australia Day means a lot to many of us Aussies with some of us celebrating and many of us having barbecues and the like. From 1946, the 26th January was named Australia Day in all states and territories. Since 1994, the Australia Day public holiday has been on 26th January throughout the country. Australia Day stands for the day of colonisation, This year, the 26th is a Saturday and the official public holiday will be on the Monday 28th January 2019.
Australia Day is actually the anniversary of the first fleet from Britain, which landed in Sydney Cove. Many Australians consider this day with much national pride and you will see many people flying the Australian flag from businesses, homes and on their cars. Many of us will attend festivals, watch fireworks, community and sporting events or gather for family barbecues at homes, in parks or even on the beach. If you are not familiar with the events/reasons for Australia Day you can learn more by clicking on this link.
On this day, many people become citizens of Australia at various Citizenship Ceremonies across the nation. Also on this day, our government awards the Order of Australia to selected Australians. This award is an Australian society of honour for giving recognition to Australian citizens for their achievement or meritorious service.
The Bayside Council will have its official Australia Day ceremony from 8:15 am. There will be a Welcome to Country, Didgeridoo performance, Flagraising, Community awards and a Citizenship Ceremony. Then from 10.00 am there will be a FREE community sausage sizzle and lamington making, as well as hula hoop demonstrations and the Party Starters band.
This year, they will also have the Traditional Aboriginal Dancers performing Diramu at 12 noon. For more information please call Customer Service on 1300 581 299.
