Australia Day Barbie Green Jam
There's nothing like a little live music to ring in Australia Day 2014. QPAC image.

Did you notice how, no sooner than Christmas cards, wrapping paper and packets of candy canes disappeared from supermarket shelves, than Australia Day gear swept in to take its place?

Bucket hats, singlets, T-shirts, flags, Southern Cross temporary tattoos and all manner of other paraphernalia ... it's all designed to fuel our patriotic fires come January 26. But where's the best place to go to be seen in this stuff?

QPAC is inviting Brisbanites to consider venturing into the great outdoors at its Australia Day Barbie on the Green.

Substitute a snag on bread for damper, an ice cold beer for billy tea and the Brisbane River for a billabong and you've got all the ingredients for an authentic Aussie bush bash.

Those with more gourmet taste buds should rest easy too. The QPAC chef will also be whipping up alternative Aussie Day delicacies as well as standard barbie fare.

Free live music performed by local homegrown talent is the key drawcard at the Australia Day Barbie on the Green.

Among the artists performing on the day will be Byron Bay's Cody Butler, Hussy Hicks, Maximo, JacksonJamesSmith, Benny D. Williams, Josh Lovegrove, Lani and Lecia, Bambini and Double Lined Minority.

Want to make a big day of it? South Bank Parklands will be the central point for Australia Day celebrations - so be aware that crowds may affect traffic, access and parking around QPAC.

The good news is, of course, that the public holiday on Monday after Australia Day offers a perfect time to rest, refresh and recover.
