To be honest, I was slightly apprehensive before arriving at this show, as the thought of sitting through an hour of someone whinging did not sound like an ideal way to spend a Friday night, but when the show began I was immediately delighted to discover that Dan's approach to comedy was both clever and utterly hilarious!
From being bitten by a Huntsman to being comedically upstaged at his own wedding, Dan has been through a lot since moving to the land down under. His struggles and triumphs are told with the skill of a seasoned professional, having performed at Fringe Shows and comedy clubs across the globe. Dan also used images in his show that helped to articulate his jokes well, and was a refreshing take on the traditional stand-up formula we have all become accustomed to.
Australia: A Whinging Poms Guide is running upstairs at The Court, which is a great venue with a friendly atmosphere and well-priced drinks. You can also head downstairs for a boogie after the show which is always a good choice!
The rating for this show is PG, which I think is a bit conservative considering the amount of racial commentary and coarse language occasionally used, I think that this show should definitely be rated a wee bit higher (but absolutely should not be marked down on quality because it was great).
All in all, I really enjoyed Australia: A Whinging Poms Guide and would absolutely recommend it to all Perthians, whether originally a Brit or not. There are jokes that people of all ages and backgrounds can relate to, and Dan's comments on Australian life were astute and hilarious.
