Then why not have it all?

Head to The Aussie Night Markets in Penrith Panthers, on Wednesday nights, for a cheap and easy, mid-week meal with over twenty food trucks and street-food stalls including Gourmet Burgers, Pizza, Vietnamese, French, Greek, Turkish, Cambodian, and Philippino food, surely there'll be something to suit any tastebuds.

Dishes range from $4 to $20, with a desserts section ranging from $3.50 to $12. There are so many options the family doesn't have to eat from the same place, but with large tables, and chairs, they can still sit down and eat together.

Despite four loops of the food stalls, it was still a tough decision to choose what to eat, because everything looked amazing. The common theme seemed to be food was cooked to order which meant it was fresh and hot.

We shared a starter of a twisted potato on a stick - $6, which was like eating a kebab of potato scallops. The kids loved it but there are certainly healthier options available.

For dinner, I ate the Beef Brisket Snack Pack - $15, which consisted of slow-cooked chunks of beef, smothered in home-made barbeque sauce, piled onto a bed of french-fries, dusted in their own special seasoning. The meat was tender and lean, with a hint of spice. It's rare to find takeaway food that tastes like mum's home cooking, but this was pretty close.

The kids ate a selection of lamb and chicken skewers - $13 for 3, served with rice, from the Cambodian stall. These were grilled when we ordered, so took about 15 minutes (we were the first customers though) which meant they were still juicy, piping hot and they devoured them.

We also shared a vegetarian dumpling plate - $10, which was a meal in itself. You get 10 dumplings for the meat variety or 8 dumplings if you order vegetarian; but they were on-par with dumplings I've eaten in Guangzhou, China - the home of Yum-Cha.

For dessert, I opted for the Sugar and Cinamon coated Churros - $3.50 for one or 2 for $6, which were light, crispy, toasty warm and scrumptious. I've eaten many a churros in my time (almost ate my height in churros at Tokyo Disneyland) and these were definitely up there with the best.

Other dessert options included Nutella or Strawberry crepes with whipped cream, fairy-floss, doughnuts, ice-cream and some crazy chocolate, sprinkles, and nutty concoction, on a stick.

Vegetarian options can be found at the French Crepe Stall, Mekong Kitchen (Thai/Vietnamese), Turkish Gozleme, Homemade Dumplings, and the Wood Fired Pizza food truck. Some stalls offer special kids packs so don't be embarrassed to ask. Most stalls sell soft-drinks or water, all are $3. There's also a coffee stand if you need a pick-up.
There's two jumping castles ($5 each castle per child, for up to 10mins) and a fishing game (from $5), to keep the kids entertained or work up an appetite.

You'll find a couple of market stalls selling:
  • Men's, women's and kid's clothing
  • Jewellery
  • Candles and fragrance diffusers
  • Fairy garden statues and accessories
  • Turkish plates and gifts for the house
  • Amongst them, there's a massage therapist and clairvoyant so you can find out what your future holds.

The Aussie Night Markets in Penrith offer a fun and tasty mid-week meal, with options for everyone, without the washing up. With outdoor seating, ambient music, and free parking, it's the perfect place to head as the weather warms up.
