Aussie Ark is an animal conservation project located in the Barrington Tops near Tomalla NSW. Their goal is to provide a supplementary Tasmanian Devil population to prevent their extinction due to devil facial tumour disease.
Aussie Ark is holding open days these school holidays,1st-27th January 2021, where you can learn about the devil's plight, watch them feed, and get up close and personal to a joey.
The facility is a three-hour drive from Newcastle into the Barrington Tops. It is a pleasant drive with some awesome scenery, however, be prepared for some sections of dirt road. We travelled in the rain and the condition of these dirt sections was still quite good.
We pre-purchased our tickets online and, upon arrival, were met by friendly dedicated staff who gave us a tour of the facility. We were taken into an enclosure to feed a group of adult male devils on a kangaroo carcass. We also got to handle a baby quoll and finished the tour with a sausage sizzle and a drink.
The staff were extremely welcoming and knowledgeable and very accomodating with the kids. The track down to the devil enclosures was very muddy, so if it is raining don't wear your good shoes.
Tour Times are 10:30, 11:30, and 12:30, with each tour running for one hour.
Prices are $35.00 per adult, $15.00 per child, $90.00 per family.
