Lake Aura Vale, located opposite Cardinia Reservoir, is a fantastic lake for a number of water activities and just having a picnic. Around the edge, there are numerous spots to stop and try your luck at fishing or just sit and enjoy the beauty of the lake. The lake and Henley's Picnic area is accessed from Wellington road, there is also a smaller park area off Aura Vale road.
From the car park and Henley's Picnic area, there is a five-minute walk along the lake towards the right-hand side through the bush. The path is gravel and well trecked but might not be accessible to some. There is an old sign saying that "these works are part of the first stage development to provide a multi-purpose trail which will eventually traverse the lake". Given the overgrowth around the rather dishevelled sign, it is unlikely these works will commence anytime soon.
There is plenty of room in the parking area to turn around for those bringing large trailers, caravans or the family van. The large toilet block has a changing area inside for those getting in the water and a disabled toilet. A couple of picnic tables are scatted around however there are no shelters or BBQ.
There is a warning that the water quality is unsuitable for swimming, which doesn't stop those looking to cool down in the hot summers with a paddle along the sandy shore. Be careful of submerged obstacles and slippery surfaces, especially around the trees and be aware that it is an unpatrolled area if deciding to swim alone.
It is a great lake for kayaking, canoes or windsurfing in the right conditions, but motorboats and jet skis are not permitted. The boat ramp is an uneven bluestone slope and can be quite slippery carrying a boat down. Some choose to use the grassy slopes instead.
