On Lebuh Bishop sits one of Penang's MICHELIN-star restaurants. Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery serves high-quality Peranakan food sought after by both locals and tourists alike. Over the years, it has attracted not only the powerful and influential residents of George Town but also sultans and other royal members from across Malaysia.
Jiu hu char
Madam Gaik Lean Beh is 70 years old and still loves cooking. She has not gotten tired of it as cooking is her 'lifelong passion'. The restaurant was opened in 2013 by her son Adrian Tan who recognised the potential of his mother's talent.
Lor bak
Some of the restaurant's specialty dishes include jiu hu char (stir-fried yam bean with shredded dried cuttlefish), chicken curry kapitan and nasi ulam (rice salad with herbs, edible leaves and flowers). However, with a non-pork kitchen, the classic Nyonya tau eu bak (soy-braised pork belly) dish won't be found on the menu. And, their deep-fried lor bak roll is made from five-spice braised chicken meat. All raw produce and ingredients are procured from halal-certified suppliers.
Nutmeg punch
The restaurant is air-conditioned and open every day except Mondays and Tuesdays. The staff is very efficient. A shared table is available right in the middle of the restaurant for walk-in customers. But, of course, making a reservation beforehand would be the way to go. You could also do takeaway if you prefer. For more information, simply head to
