Sure,it got the Oscar nods and heaps of good and bad press, but this flic, aside from being about the dysfunctional family to end all dysfunctional families- is all about acting.
With a star-studded cast, Streep, Roberts, Cumberbatch, Cooper & Mcgregor, this is melodrama, that's brash,foul-mouthed, as well as, self consciously offensive. That said, it has excellent plot twists with glib, overcooked dialogue.
Let's set the stage for the nerve-wrecking family reunion, when alcoholic Bevely Watson commits suicide. His widow Violet, a witty, acid-mouthed matriarch, half-zonked pill-head remains in the house.
She is joined by her three daughters,an unhappy cynic (Roberts), a bland saint (Nicholson) and a ditz with dreadful taste in men (Lewis) and a variety of husbands and children.
The film is dark, moody with laughter the only way for the audience to stave off embarrassment. It's 130 minutes of not good-feel family bonding, I assure you. I am still wondering why a semi-hopeful ending was tagged on...
If you want devastation, but with great acting, this flic is for you.
