Augie's Loop Hike D'Aguilar National Park

Augie's Loop is a combination of a few trails to form a loop starting at Bullocky Dam. Travel on Mount Nebo Road and the turn off is about 500 m to the west of Jolly's Lookout. Parking is available. Make sure not to park in front of the gate to allow the passage of the rangers and emergency vehicles.



The hike is about 17 km long, so allow five hours. The elevation is about 500 metres. The walk is classified hard for the steepness and for the length. Fitness is required to cope with the challenges of this hike and some hiking experience is recommended. Wear hiking boots or hiking shoes.

From the carpark, follow South Boundary Road for a couple of kilometres, then turn right to Augies Road intersection. The hike is better tackled anticlockwise.









I hiked Augie's Loop with the Group Hiking South East Qld and More. We tackled the trail in an anticlockwise direction. The track is practically downhill until the Cabbage Tree Creek. From there, the trail is uphill. The hike was accompanied by the calls of different birds.



Xanthorrhoea is a genus known by the name of grass trees. Xanthorrhoea are endemic iconic plants in Australia. They are perennial and flowering plants, growing very slowly according to the conditions of the environment. Grass trees live very long, up to 350- 450 years old.

Flowers appear on a long spike that can be up to four metres long. The flowers attract a variety of insects including bees. Xanthorrhoea trees are likely to survive in a fire. They can be seen all charred on the outside but inside, they are alive and they keep growing. Sometimes the flowering is stimulated by a bushfire.







On Augies Road, walk for about 4 km to the intersection with Creek Road. There is a water tank just before the intersection as a landmark.





Cycads are plants that were very common and diverse in fossil history. Today are considered dinosaur plants and very ornamental in gardens for their perennial green thick foliage.



It is amazing how skillfully the birds build their nest. From the most simple nest to the most complicated, the nests show it is built in their DNA to prepare a little home for the chicks.





Hardenbergia violacea 'Happy Wanderer' is a common native Australian plant that produces little purple flowers. This plant is appreciated in the gardens for its green foliage and the flowers appearing in winter.



Balloon cotton plant produces capsules that release fluffy seeds hen open. The plants have been naturalised since it is now food for different Australian wildlife such as butterflies. The plant is native to southeast Africa.















Turn left on Creek Road and walk for about 100 m to the intersection of South Boundary Road. Here turn left onto South Boundary Road. Walk for about 1.6 km to the next intersection with Scrub Road.





Continue walking on South Boundary Road, until you come across Scrub Road bush camp with a storm shelter, a water tank and a fireplace with benches.





Continue walking on South Boundary Road for the remaining 7 km to the carpark.



After the hike, there are a few options for coffee and refreshments, Cafe in the Mountains is just a few minutes away, 1863 Mount Nebo Rd, Mount Nebo QLD 4520.

]Walkabout Creek Cafe[/LINK] is at 60 Mount Nebo Rd, Enoggera Reservoir QLD 4520. It features a great outdoor covered area and it is suitable for big groups.

Tank Stream Social is at 236 South Pine Rd, Enoggera QLD 4051. This place has just been open and it has been built to recreate the same atmosphere of an Italian piazza.

**What to bring
**
Hiking gear: a hiking medium backpack, long trousers and shirt with long sleeve, light raincoat, hiking ankle supportive boots, first aid kit, insect repellent (it works for leeches - give preference to cream or roll-on that are more environmentally friendly than the spray), sunscreen, gloves, walking poles if you like to use them, socks protectors or gaiters.

Consider packing some extra clothes and leaving them in the car. Pack some clean footwear and socks.

For this hike, consider carrying a map or download a good app on your smartphone that can help you to navigate in the bush.

Bring a medium day backpack with lots of water, especially if it's a hot day, 4.0 litres of water and snacks. During summer, you can bring electrolytes to dissolve in water to compensate for the loss through perspiration. You may consider packing sandwiches, fresh fruit, dry fruit, energy bars and small meals.

Walk with family, friends or in a group. Never alone!

Directions

The trail starts at South Boundary Road on a dirt road. Then turn off is 500 metres to the west of Jolly's Lookout. Coming from Brisbane drive on Mount Nebo Road and then turn left into South Boundary Road.
