Augie March is a much loved indie rock band that have resurfaced after what they have called a hiatus. The hiatus lasted some five years while band members did their own thing.

They originated in Shepparton in 1995 before gaining a following in the Melbourne alternative underground scene, then making it big on the Australian charts and touring nationally and internationally. They are best known for their classic One Crowded Hour, but more than this, have a substantial five album back catalogue.

My association with Augie March is fresh, but on meeting friends and associates at their recent concert, I realised they are fortunate to have a loyal fan base. Augie March are not calling this a comeback tour, just picking up where they left off. They are touring upscale venues throughout Australia. They played Her Majesty's Theatre on Friday, March 27th to a full house.

Despite the long time between drinks for this band, the audience was full of anticipation. They have a diverse following of twenty somethings, to grey haired nomads. Several friends were there from all walks of life. This is Adelaide, you will always meet people you know. Augie March last played Adelaide six years ago, but the feeling was still there.

Her Majesty's Theatre has had a recent renovation, but the art deco features and charm of this heritage building are still intact. The seating now has no central aisle, which makes access to seats more involved, particularly if you are seated in the centre. My advice is to breathe in when allowing people to get to their seats.

Augie March are a five piece band augmented by a three man horn section. The sound is guitar rock based with a huge rhythm section. There are some parallels to Crowded House in their inspired songs and glorious lead vocals. The Augie March base player is rooted to the spot but can pump out the beat. But what sets this band apart are the calibre of the songs and the voice of Glenn Richards. At times mournful, soaring, belting and playful, this voice can do no wrong.

At times Glenn appears a bit self-conscious, sighing at one point. Perhaps he is too hard on himself and tuning those guitars. The band pulled together songs from their extensive back catalogue and new tracks from the recently released Havens Dumb. They left the stage briefly and thankfully for the audience returned to perform the achingly beautiful One Crowded Hour.

This is a band that has inspired long term devotion. Children have been named after them. People have been married and buried to their music. A fine testament to the haunting beauty of their music. It was a fine night to make their acquaintance. They are worth getting to know on their return appearances to the concert and music scene of Australia and beyond.
