The exhibition is sponsored by the Royal Queensland Art Society (Brisbane Branch Inc), a non-profit society formed in 1887. Audrey joined the Royal Queensland Art Society in 1983 and is a Fellow of the society. To be a Fellow means that the society considers her to be an artist of merit who has made a significant contribution to the society.Audrey's oil and water colour painting are modestly understated and offer honest and unpretentious depictions of all the things she loves, places she has been, and people she knows. Over the years she has embraced various styles in her pursuit of the aesthetic, yet her work has always remained recognisably Audrey.Audrey Gibbs was born in Maryborough in 1921, and educated to matriculation standard at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School. She loved drawing from an early age and was privately tutored during her school years. In her late teens she worked in a commercial art studio in Brisbane. She married soon after the Second World War and then produced and reared six children. Her husband was a doctor, who became a Federal Member of Parliament. When her fifth child was two, her husband encouraged her to take up her art again, and it was her first encounter with oil painting when she attended life classes with Melville Haysom once a week for a year. In 1978 she studied drawing and watercolours at Seven Hills College of Art. She joined the Pastel Society in 1980 and the Half Dozen Group in 1983.Previous exhibitions have been at Ardrossan Gallery (1986 and 1988), Riverhouse Gallery (1993 and 1995), as well as several presented in her own home at Chelmer. Her favourite subjects express the joy of youth, life, and the security of the home. Her chief fascination is for figures in interiors, in any medium. For more information on this exhibition, please visit rqas.com.au and www.facebook.com/rqasBris
