When you fancy breakfast at 1pm
On Errol Street, tucked in the suburbs of North Melbourne you'll often find a queue outside of The Auction Rooms Cafe. With its industrial chic decor, you'll feel more than comfortable sipping one of its freshly brewed teas or coffees accompanied perfectly by an innovative and unique menu of all-day breakfast dishes, filling lunches and simple sides. It's well worth the wait to brunch in this hidden gem.
From the outside, the cafe looks much like a neglected Victorian building. However, the buzz of people inside and out brings attention to its industrial chic style and intricate decor. The cafe serves a variety of occasions with small and cosy tables for couples and friends as well as bar-style seats for working men and women who happen to be passing.
Upon arrival, service is attentive and prompt despite the heavy turnover of customers. The menu serves a variety of needs with breakfast-style goods that satisfy any hunger. Or, you can select from a few choice lunch dishes from a take on the classic fish finger sandwich to a confit duck salad and poached egg that is sure to tantalise the tastebuds. Or, for the more particular of guests you can create your own medley of treats from maple and coffee glazed bacon to brussels sprouts okonomiyaki. Though not the cheapest place for lunch in Melbourne, the quality of the food served seems to justify the price.
As one would expect from such a high-end and stylish eatery, the vegetarian options are plentiful. With a variety of vegetable-based main dishes as well as sweet options (such as a passionfruit and white chocolate brûlée toast - yum) that need no meat to complete, the vegetarian in the group will never be disappointed or short of variety.
For the early riser, you can also choose from the 'first crack' menu of soft-boiled eggs with rye soldiers and the choice of locally sourced oat porridge or toasted granola and milk. You'll have to be prompt though, the first crack is only served until 9:30AM. Ideal for the early riser with a long day ahead.
It's hard to be disappointed by The Auction Rooms cafe. It's worth the short walk from the city centre for a meal you can't get anywhere else.
