If you're a vegan or vegetarian, the disappointment of finding the same uninspiring menu choices (roast vegetable salad and mushroom risotto I'm looking at you!) then read on! Au Lac Vegan Cuisine is offering up an entire menu jampacked with vegan-friendly flavour. With two locations in Canberra (Woden and Dickson), you can finally stop dreaming and start drooling about a pleasant plant-based plate of flavour!
The menu at Au Lac embraces vegan 'meat alternatives' with gusto. Most of them are soy-based and mimic fish, chicken, pork and beef with surprising skill. Even if you're usually a meat eater, if you use a little imagination, you might (almost) be convinced they're the real deal. The sauces are full of the same flavour you would expect at any Asian fusion restaurant so you get the heat, spice, and punch of Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese food that you would expect minus the meat.
If you aren't a fan of fake meats some of the dishes also offer tofu or just vegetables and whichever whatever you choose, it is bound to be more satisfying than a bland, stodgy risotto. The service at Au Lac is considerate and efficient although the meals took slightly longer than would be usual at an Asian restaurant in this price range. When the food did arrive, it was vege-heaven and our mixed table of flexitarians and omnivores had no complaints about the meat alternatives.
Au Lac is a great choice for anyone who is exclusively vegetarian or vegan but also well worth a try if you're dipping your toe into the world of reducing your meat intake. You can see the potential of vegetables and meat alternatives in all their glory and hopefully, be inspired to eat a little less meat.
