What's the truth? And how much does it matter? Should we try to get it right? Or should we just try to get along?
Subtlenuance as part of the
Sydney Fringe Festival 2016, presents
Atlantis, a play written by Paul Gilchrist.
Young couple Sarah (Madeleine Withington) and Tom (Antony Talia) have made some serious mistakes leaving them jobless, carless… and basically homeless. In an attempt to escape reality, they move their life to Byron Bay where Sarah's aunt Zelda (Sylvia Keays) says she can help. Tom is unsure about this, Sarah describes her aunt as pretty out there – Tom thinks she sounds like a real weirdo….and we discover she makes a living selling crystals (no, not the meth kind). Tom is not into the new-age "bullshit" but starts to change his tune after he meets Zelda. She has him hard at work in the workshop and has Sarah making dreamcatchers.
As they start to settle into their new life, Tom starts to change his tune, Sarah is not so easily convinced and has a more what-you-see-is-what-you-get take on life. The play is about the stories we tell ourselves to help us get through life, the power these stories can have over us (and the potential danger it can get us into)
Described as comic magic realism by subtlenuance, the early marketing material delivered it to be a more magical but during the development it transitioned into a more "naïve realism".
Deeply thought-provoking and often hilarious, take a step into the world of Atlantis.
