Just 40 minutes from Ipswich and a little over an hour from Brisbane is a day trip location that's great for families, water sport and fishing fanatics alike. was completed in 1970 and is located between the towns of Tarampa, Coominya and Gatton in Queensland.

Swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing and jet skiing are all allowed on the dam and there is no need for a permit. The Dam is stocked with a variety of freshwater species. Although the dam water levels are currently low there is still plenty of room for everyone to have some water fun. You do, however, need to check the SEQ Water website for updates about water quality.

Jet skis seemed to be popular the January weekend I visited with groups of young people and families enjoying rides on knee boards, water skis and inflatables.

A long stroll along the banks of the dam was a favourite for our four legged fur-baby who firmly believes all of our family holidays are exclusively for her enjoyment. Yes, dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead.

Most families spend their days lazing under the shady trees or pop-up marquees. You can choose to take a picnic lunch or have a BBQ on the free electric BBQ's and picnic benches at the dam. There is a boat ramp and a safety zone for the little swimmers as well as a toilet block.

If you decide you want to stay another day, you can check out accommodation options at either of the two caravan parks. The Holiday Park is the pick of accommodation, not just because it is walking distance to the dam, but it has been recently renovated and offers great facilities including a pool, shop, café, camp kitchen and fireplace. It is dog friendly as well and offers camping, cabins and caravan sites for very reasonable rates.
