Movie soundtracks to make you feel good and wriggle
Way back in the early 1900's, before the invention of the "talking picture," all movies were completely silent. The infusion of music into the film venue is speculated to have happened for many reasons.
Music was already a commonplace element in the theatres and it was brought over to films not only because of tradition, but to add a depth to the two-dimensional image that appeared upon the screen.
An added benefit was that it covered up the cacophony of noise that spewed from the projector. The majority of silent films were accompanied by anything from full orchestras to organists and pianists. It was Birth of a Nation that was the first to have a score compiled specifically for it.
With the advent of the talking pictures, music once again established itself as a vital element in the film industry. The creation of original scores became popular in the 1930s with Max Steiner writing the first completely original score for King Kong.
Since then, the soundtracks have become nearly as important as the movie. Think The Man from Snowy River, Chariots of Fire, and Titanic. You only have to hear the music and you can name the movie, isn't that right?
The Redland Sinfonia is a community-based orchestra composed of people of all ages and walks of life who share a common passion. What is that common thread? The love of music making as a hobby.
