An eccentric woman, known only as
Gwen, suffocates under the crushing weight of heartbroken despair and finds herself completely suspended in disillusioned time, overcome by the grief of grappling with her memories and emotions of a lover past. What becomes of a woman who will not, or cannot, move on?
Gwen meanders aimlessly through the
ranging moods of her wide-eyed delight from clenching her mandarin between her busy fingers, the
awe and wonder in her eyes when staring intently at her puzzle pieces gleefully plucked one at a time, the
heartwarming joy dancing along to her Elvis Presley cassette tapes, but continually interrupted by the
overwhelming ache which always seems to be just at the back of her mind ready to erupt and bubble over at any given moment dissolving her into blank,
empty gazes dripping with anguish and misery.
The creator,
Samantha Chester contorts herself swiftly, gracefully and forlornly in a desperate attempt to navigate the
crippling depths of heartbroken despair. She is such a beautifully expressive and well-trained performer who conveyed this odd character.
The intimate setting of the
Blue Room Theatre allowed the creator to convey the depths of human misery, spoken loudly through nothing but her facial expressions and her gorgeously delicate hands. The lighting displays were as captivating as the performer herself and at times, it was hard to decide where to look for fear of missing out. The whole audience sat in silence and awe throughout the entire
50 minutes of the gripping solo performance.
Probably the best part was the buzzing chatter as everyone poured out of the theatre comparing their ideas and reactions of the show, all largely varied interpretations (but all positive reviews nonetheless!). Head on down and tell us what you thought of it!
Words simply do not come close to doing justice in describing the magic of the rollercoaster that it "The Astronaut". I cannot commend this memorable performance highly enough, and the distraught facial expressions will haunt my deepest fears for many years to come.
