I am reviewing this film as a movie in its own right and not related to the video game of the same name. Although it is labelled an action adventure film, Assassin's Creed contains aspects of science fiction through its use of futuristic scientific technology in the field of DNA manipulation coupled with time travel in the past. Rich in imagery, symbolism and realism, the movie offers audiences another look at the common theme of dark vs light: "We work in the dark to serve the light. We are assassins."

An absolutely stunning performance by Michael Fassbender ,as Callum Lynch, secures the success of this film and its original story, which is at times exhilarating to watch especially with all the fly-over scenery shots. The violence in the film is not gory like in many other movies and the fighting sequences are superb to watch. The use of Spanish language and subtitles in the past time sequences adds another dimension to this film. What a relief to not have to hear American accents!

When Callam Lynch is connected to a machine called the Animus, it is done in a very Matrixesque way and allows him to relive the memories of his ancestor Agullar de Nerha. The film raises issues about how to curb violence in society and how the actions of our ancestors have a direct link to our own actions in the present day. The film also highlights the continuation of ancient secret societies and their evil intentions.

My one criticism of the film is that many times the camera lingers way too long on Marion Cotillard's elegant, poised, and non-emotional face. The ending is very much open-ended so I expect a sequel will manifest soon. I give this film 9 out of 10 stars.
