Put this one in your schedule - Sunday 19 August. Asa Broomhall's fifth independent CD release "Jangle House" at the Brisbane Powerhouse.

I came across Asa Broomhall earlier this year. This local singer / songwriter was performing at Waxing Lyrical , also at the Powerhouse. One part rock, one part blues and one part roots, I was blown away by his tune "Every Second Weekend", a emotive and lyrical tale of growing up with parents divorcing, and the woes that this situation brings. After the performance, Asa described that although he's lucky enough to have parents that are still together, he saw the unravelled lives that his peers lived with, and when he sang the line "with a trap like that, you don't catch love, but she'll just brush it off", I felt a strong emotional connection to this song and this performer.

Asa put together a new album in the aftermath of SEQ 2011 floods, recording, mixing and overdubbing in a number of places to bring together a sound that embodies the album's title "Jangle House".

I've been to a few live shows now and particularly like his song "Overnite Sensation" where the lyrics talk of his playing for 11 years to be an overnight sensation. Asa has been performing for 12 years now, touring and playing festivals all over Australia, as well performing in the UK, USA and Canada. I'm looking forward to hearing his rendition of the Bob Marley track "Waiting in Vain", which has been recorded for the upcoming album.

Asa will be supported by Jimi Beavis , which will bring a strong blues flavour to the afternoon. There's a new, jazz-trained, rhythm section for this band and they will be performing a mixture of known and new songs, as well as looking forward to recording a new album in the new year. You can read my previous review on Jimi Beavis here .
