Students around New South Wales work hard every year to complete their Higher School Certificate. Those doing Visual Arts aren't just working from textbooks. They are required to produce a 'major work' in this time, alongside their other studies. I attempted Visual Arts in Year 12 but took so long to come up with an idea that I had to get rid of the subject. I admire those who managed to finish and the effort that went into each work.

These artworks deserve to be seen. But where can the public take a look at the amazing works produced each year?

1. Art Gallery of New South Wales
For most people, ARTEXPRESS offers the best way to see HSC artworks. It is entirely dedicated to displaying the best HSC artworks each year, and the principal venue of its touring exhibition is the Art Gallery of NSW . In fact, 2013 marks the 30th year that the gallery has hosted an ARTEXPRESS exhibition, which is typically held from February to April each year in the temporary exhibition gallery (on your left once you have entered the building). It costs nothing to see the HSC artworks here.

There are more ARTEXPRESS works to be seen at the gallery at The Newington Armory at Sydney Olympic Park . This exhibition, which is larger that the one at the Art Gallery of NSW (in fact it is the largest ARTEXPRESS exhibition you can see), takes place in March and April and, once again, entry is free.

3. Hazelhurst Regional Gallery
Another location in Sydney where you can view ARTEXPRESS works is at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery , in the Sutherland Shire. A exhibition takes place here each year from February to March.

4. Regional Galleries
In addition to its city exhibitions, ARTEXPRESS also tours a lot of regional galleries as part of its Regional Tour of New South Wales. The specific galleries to be visited change every year, but ones that have hosted ARTEXPRESS in past years or will be visited in 2013 include:

- Blue Mountains Cultural Centre
- Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery
- Dubbo Regional Gallery
- Grafton Regional Gallery
- Griffith Regional Art Gallery
- Goulburn Regional Art Gallery
- Maitland Regional Art Gallery
- Moree Plains Gallery
- Newcastle Regional Art Gallery (this one is visited every year)
- Orange Regional Gallery
- Shoalhaven City Art Centre
- Tamworth Regional Gallery
- Wagga Wagga Regional Art Gallery
- Wollongong City Gallery

5. Local Galleries
Outside of the ARTEXPRESS program, there are also some local galleries that hold their own exhibition of works by students in the area. For example, there was an exhibition of local students' artworks in Strathfield Town Hall in December this year.

The venues for ARTEXPRESS and the other HSC artwork exhibitions are constantly changing. In the past, works have been shown in the windows of David Jones in Sydney's Central Business District, in The Rocks, at UNSW's College of Fine Arts and at the Australian Catholic University.
