Not all seniors sit at home watching Karl Stefanovic
The Donald Simpson Community Centre opened over thirty years ago as a facility for the mature aged community members of the Redlands, on the southern end of Brisbane's Moreton Bay.
It was developed to benefit the elderly and those close to retirement age by providing activity and information programs at a nominal fee. Currently, the centre is running over 40 programs in health, education as well as social activities.
The centre has long proved an invaluable initiative and support to the elders within the community. These days there is no excuse to sit at home twiddling your thumbs wondering how to fill in the hours.
Craft activities at the centre have several interest groups meeting on a weekly basis to learn, upskill or simply enjoy their craft in the company of like-minded people. Last year, I was fortunate to meet a group of marvellous folk who meet to enjoy sewing together. One group even sewed children's pyjamas and clothing which they donated to community services to assist kiddies in need.
Other artisan interest groups include leatherwork, woodwork, parchment crafts, quilting, handcrafts, and artwork, as well as water colour paintings by members of the affiliated group, University of the Third Age.
These groups are coming together on the weekend of Saturday, 25th August, and Sunday, 26th August, to display their wares in an Art and Craft Show at the centre at 172 Bloomfield Street.
As well as being able to admire the handiwork of some very clever men and women, there will be items available for purchase. This is the letter opener I picked up last year. Lovely, isn't it?
The Donald Simpson Centre Cafe will be open for business on both days, so it will be easy to lose a few hours relaxing and enjoying the exhibition. There is no entry fee for this event, so a sneaky slice of cake with that cuppa sounds the perfect accompaniment.
This venue has wheelchair access and off street parking.
Come along and support our more senior folk and be amazed at what they can achieve.
