Be Artrageously Arty Crafty at Deagon
Where can you go to learn new crafty skills, meet other like minded folk, and explore wonderful art? In Deagon, on the northside of Brisbane, tucked away off the main drag, are old former shops which now are the home of the Artrageous Arts and Crafts Centre. It's just a short walk from Sandgate Road or the Deagon Train Station.
It is an interesting place which houses an Art Gallery, classrooms for learning, and a little quirky shop that sells a variety of items made by the members. There's also a garden full of a variety of artworks created by the clever folk at Artrageous.
The Artrageous Arts and Crafts Centre opened back in 1999, and is a non-profit and non-government funded community centre run by volunteers.
Each day of the week there are classes, from the Special Needs Workshops on Tuesday run by Artist in Residence Anne Gadsby, Drawing Class on Wednesday with Artist in Residence Shane Rodwell, who also runs "Different Strokes Adult Art Classes" on Wednesdays. Fridays is Drop In! day, with the Renaissance Art and Craft Club, where members bring their own art or craft project to work on. This costs $5, and runs from 10 am to 12 noon, with Anne Gadsby. Anne also runs Mosaic Art Classes on Saturday mornings
Anne is also responsible for the many succulent plants in strange containers in the back garden! It's great to have a wander through the garden and view the wacky and clever items in amongst the plants.
Throughout the year, there are other events, including Life Drawing Classes each month, Chit Chat Club, and Garden Parties, the latter scheduled for 13th May, 20th August and 19th November.
Plum Devine is the name given to the shop which is a great place to source gifts and homewares. It is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.
A number of rooms are available for hire for meetings and a range of other activities, at reasonable rates. Contact the folk at Artrageous on (07) 3269 1535 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
One of the members is Joanne Hansford, who keeps herself busy making quilts, and each Friday she attends with her trusty sewing machine and works on her wonderful quilts.
