When I first visited ArtPlay I really wished there was a similar space for adults. It's an area where kids and families meet to play, create and learn. The space inside is always changing depending on the activities. Most of the time there's a small fee for attending events and workshops, but here at Weekend Notes we've found some in January and February which are absolutely free of charge.
If your children play a musical instrument or are showing a particular knack for shaking the maraca, this is the workshop for you. MSO ArtPlay Open Workshops are run by musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and encourage children to immerse themselves in the world of musical improvisation. Children will be given the opportunity to express interest in being part of the MSO ArtPlay Ensemble as part of the workshop.
When? Saturday 2 February and Sunday 3 February, 10am to 11am; 12noon to 1pm; 2.30pm to 3.30pm
Enjoy a truly interactive play experience with Pocketfool and Melbourne artist Geoffrey Ricardo at Come In Outside. Children are encouraged to decide and discover what's on the other side of doors and coloured windows in ArtPlays Backyard.
When? Saturday 19 January, 10am to 11.30am (Preview) Friday 15 February, Saturday 16 February and Sunday 17 February, 10am to 1pm
There's nothing like a good old campfire singalong to unite the family. This one off night time event invites you to make shadow puppets, listen to ghost stories and join in a campfire sing-along. The perfect way to give your family the camping experience without the packing and cleaning.
ArtPlay is very easy to get to but parking in the area can be costly and limited. The best option is public transport. Find your way to Federation Square by catching the train, tram or bus and follow the signs to Birraung Marr, just behind Fed Square.
Make the most of the playground and seating by having a picnic.
