On Saturday November 25, the doors of Z Ward at the former Glenside Mental Hospital will open to the public again to host a free showcase of traditional artisan trades in this magnificent heritage building. Visitors are welcome to roam the building and find out more heritage conservation and the skills required to preserve our heritage buildings.
The free Open Day will enable people to interact with artisan tradespeople and learn about heritage restoration and conservation. A variety of live demonstrations of traditional skills and their use in conserving heritage will be on show including stonemasonry, fibrous plaster techniques, blacksmithing, stained glass window working, roofing, pressed metal practices and heritage carpentry.
The Artisan Trades Open Day is hosted by the new Australian Artisan Trades Academy (AATA) a unique collaboration between Applied Building Conservation Training and the
National Trust of South Australia . It is the first heritage skills training academy in Australia, conducting specialist seminars, training courses and practical workshops at locations around South Australia. The goal of the academy is to provide practical learning opportunities in the applied use of traditional trades and skills and to inspire a culture of care and appreciation for Australia's heritage buildings, great and small. Programs at AATA will commence early in 2018.
Z Ward at Glenside Hospital is an imposing heritage building completed in 1884 by one of colonial South Australia's most important architects, Edward John Woods. The polychromatic brickwork technique used by Woods in its design is the most elaborate, sophisticated example of this architectural style in South Australia. For eighty years Z Ward housed those people who were considered unsafe or too dangerous for prison or other psychiatric institutions.
In 2014, South Australia's former Hospital for Criminal Mental Defectives, known as Z Ward, was
opened to the public for the first time in forty years and
drew enormous crowds . Since that time the National Trust has operated regular tours and events with the generous support of Beach Energy, which purchased the building in 2014.
This weekend the doors open for the free from 10am until 3pm on Saturday with refreshments available. Unfortunately, wheelchair access is not possible at this time. Access is from 63 Conyngham Street, Glenside only - look for the brown tourist attraction street sign on Conyngham Street.
