Held on the third Sunday of every month, the is a collectors special with a wide-ranging group of stallholders selling locally made arts and crafts. Indoor and outdoor stalls ensure that this market is weather proof, and can be enjoyed all year around.
The Arteyrea Market is held at 23 Mortlock Terrace in the tastefully renovated and redecorated bright blue Arteyrea Workshops building. The building features eight leadlight windows depicting sea themes which adorn the front of the building which were the result of a project undertaken by local leadlight artists.
The building was originally the South Australian Railways Institute and was refurbished by the Port Lincoln City Council as a community workshop space, and is now home to many of the region's art and craft groups and this monthly market.
Carparking is on side streets, as the building's car park is occupied by some stall holders, as well as by the Port Lincoln Lions BBQ Stand serving sausages, bacon and egg sandwiches, steak sandwiches, hamburgers and soft drinks. Other outside stalls include books, plants, secondhand clothes and a trailer selling live brown hens.
Inside the building is a U-Shaped series of interconnected tables and benches that host around 20 stalls and a reasonable crowd of active purchasers. Products on sale vary from the commercially produced local Popes Honey to the tradtional homemade favourites.
The range of products on sale was broad and included books, plants, knitted scarves and hats, kids clothes, nuts, gift cards, jewellery, stones, crystals, prints, soaps, handbags, purses and various flavours of jams and preserves.
The stall that attracted most of my time was a metalwork stall, where a metalworker had managed to cut and shape many different types of tin and steel in to imaginative pieces of art. The large Marlin fish hanging on the wall were particularly special, and would create a great talking point in anyone's seaside home.
The Arteyrea Market is open from 9am to 2pm on the third Sunday of every month. Further details of stallholders, specials and special market days around Christmas can be found from the
Arteyrea Markets facebook page .
