Rozelle is a vibrant and trendy place to be, with plenty of cafés, restaurants and even King George Park for a peaceful retreat. Another fine aspect of Rozelle is the art scene and with Art Month Sydney well on its way, a great place take in some international artwork is at
on Darling Street.
The Artereal building was a former heritage fire station, way back when the fire cart was horse drawn, hence the large aspect window to the front. When the founder, Luisa Catanzaro, started to renovate the building in 2006 the original beams and brickwork had been covered due to a previous possessor sectioning the space into offices.
Since the building has been restored back to its former glory, the space has provided an impressive area for both emerging and established artists to exhibit their work including, Annamarie Dzendrowskyj, Claude Jones, Liam Benson, and Carla Hananiah.
From the outside, you cannot miss the current paste up work by
Jason Wing , who utilises iconography from his Chinese Aboriginal heritage combined with Jason's own childhood photographs.
Gary Deirmendjian 's architectural sculpture imposes on the car park to the left hand side. The two stark white bodies of work contrast perfectly against their weathered brickwork surroundings.
Inside, a vibrant exhibition entitled Northern Lights has a playful feel. This established group of Thai artists have a variety of pieces, from sculpture, canvas, neon and projection. Located on the right side, close to the desk, is the work of
Charles Dennington . Again his work runs along the theme of playfulness, the exploration of object, artefact and representation.
This is the last weekend to see the Northern Lights and Charles Dennington's work. Check out the website for more details.
