A free four-day contemporary art festival will shoot for the stars as organisers roll out interactive public art activities, live music, family-friendly theatre performances and children's art workshops.

Now in its second year, Art with Altitude will be held from 24-27 October on the greens at Skygate shopping precinct at Brisbane Airport.

At first glance, an airport shopping precinct seems an unlikely location for such a festival. But really, what better vantage point is there from which to scale the heights and see the world with fresh eyes?

With 'suspended in translation' as this year's theme, Art with Altitude is no ordinary art festival, says Renaye Peters of Brisbane Airport Corporation.

Art with Altitude 'celebrates our airport setting with themes of connections, voyages and crossing borders,' she says. 'At the same time, its large-scale interactive artworks immersed within Skygate's open green spaces and retail environment challenge how and where art should be enjoyed.'

The program will assemble 20 or so sculptures from leading Australian artists.

A highlight will be Leonie Rhodes' collaborative community sculpture where festival-goers' individually-crafted plasticine figures will be displayed en masse to form Stratospherical .

Other drawcards include Development, a 3.5m high trike made from recycled car bonnets and IMAG_NE, a giant scrabble-inspired sculpture.

My personal favourite is Vanessa Stanley's Your Altered Gaze Returned, sparked by her research into astronomy and old amusement park style mirrors.

Your Altered Gaze Returned is billed as 'an observatory that collects and manipulates the action of people and nature using the properties of light, space and time'.

Art with Altitude will also see the return of Queensland Theatre Company presenting its The Lost Property Rules children's theatre by Matthew Ryan.

Meanwhile, QAGOMA will present Make a Roo children's art workshops from the 'Kangaroo Crew' exhibition by Indigenous Australian artist Gordon Hookey currently on display at the Gallery of Modern Art.

There will be weekend performances of Lissa and Nee Nee's Riverside Adventure. Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra's Chamber Ensemble will also present their fun interactive kids' concert. Live bands and street performers will also strut their stuff.

Art with Altitude will be curated by Natasha Edwards, founding director of the highly successful Swell Sculpture Festival on the Gold Coast.

'Art with Altitude invites people of all ages to discover and connect with unique contemporary installations, see live art in progress and perhaps even become an artist in the making,' Ms Peters said.
