Remember your carefree delight when someone first handed you a bunch of crayons and you diligently scribbled your first masterpiece on paper...or like in my case, ahem, the living room wall? Human nature was meant to be inventive, it is what contrasts us from other living creatures. Back in the day, self-crafted cards were all the rage....I'm sure some of you might still have them tucked-in into a drawer for memory. Especially now that everything has gone cyber and electronic, with opulent gifts available at every click and shopping for a gift is made so easy, it's even harder to stand-out in the crowd. Why not make your gift as unique as your relationship surely is? It takes less time than you think it would. Alternatively just do it for your own pleasure, that is the best reason to do anything.

So you head out, feeling all creative, to the nearest mall and check out fun DIY options. Australia is the ultimate DIY destination yet somehow, you come across nothing for true make-from-scratch items when it comes to art and craft. Options are few and far-between, and the rare custom-objects found are disappointing for someone on a budget.

Enter ART SHED.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Moorabin, my husband and I undoubtedly zoomed past it many times while going towards the beach or the DFO nearby. But on one lazy Saturday afternoon we decided to stop-by.

CLOSE TO MY HEART

My obsession was with oil paints and canvasses...painting puts me in a meditative state and offers a respite from the peaks and valleys of life. It is surprisingly liberating and creating something from scratch is the most exhilarating experience. To me, anything artsy, I imagine, would feel no different than giving birth to a child with your flesh and blood and you feel like a proud mother looking for the first time at the masterpiece you created. Fundamentally, the feeling is same, the degree of it obviously varies. So I walked in, expecting the usual array of paint tubes and brushes and standard canvas sizes and much less of anything else.

WHAT IS ART SHED ALL ABOUT?

It is a family owned 8-years-young business that offers art and craft supplies of excellent quality suitable for all ages and experience levels. It is a warehouse also having an inbuilt studio, of a huge variety of objects that I doubt you would come across anywhere else in Melbourne. The most heady combination happens when your favourite things are affordable and there are no limits to what you can create.

WHAT ALL THINGS ARE AVAILABLE?

Scrapbook items, all types of paints with many brands, all types of brushes, knives, pencils, mediums, varnishes, pastels, charcoal, kids' poster paints and posters, body paint, fabric paint, calligraphy and print equipment, ink, portfolios, glues and adhesives, powdered pigments, multi-sized canvases and easels to name just a few. My goal is to show you the variety it spans, I was literally wonder-struck.

IS ART SHED FOR YOU?

1. If you love canvas painting and want to begin buying from a one-stop-shop.
2. If you are a professional artist and want the fancier and cool stuff ( think mediums, varnishes, sprays, knives, kits) that's hard to get. I am almost willing to bet you already know about this place just because I've seen stuff here that I don't see anywhere else.
3. If you want your kids to experience colours in different ways...be it crayons, markers, paint pots and more.
4. If you are a student and an assignment is coming up.
5. If you want to develop a hobby and don't know where to start.
6. If a special occasion is coming and you want to make something on your own to make it memorable but don't know what to do next.
7. If you want to discover/refine your art skills, ART SHED has art classes for adults and kids.
8. If you are an art teacher you can hire out the ART SHED studio FREE of charge to run art classes.
9. If you are an artist wanting to hold an exhibition, contact them.
10. If you love to customize your scrapbook with unique dainty stuff.
11. If you want other sizes and shapes of canvasses for professional use.
12. If you are a lover of art and feeling crafty but cannot afford to set aside too much money for it.
13. If you are on a creativity-block. That's right, it's just like writer's block. I have experienced it myself.
14. Lastly, if you think art and craft is not your cup-of-tea...just walk in for 10 minutes and you might surprise yourself.
