Having just stayed at the new Art Series Hotel in Bendigo, I was very excited to learn that the Melbourne Art Series Hotels are offering free monthly art tours of their Melbourne based hotels.
If you haven't heard of these hotels, they are flamboyant, artistic and unusual takes on your standard hotel.
While hotels have long commissioned art works for their premises these hotels are dedicated to and even named after individual artists.
In the Schaller Studio in Bendigo where I just stayed, every room has an original painting by Mark Schaller, a prominent Melbourne artist, and the foyer and even the grounds had his huge canvases, sculptures or murals.
It was a very exciting and creative place to stay. They even provided you with your own small canvas and set of paints should you feel so inspired.
"I am a romantic painter, (but not sweet) – oh no. That's wrong. Dreams are what you're made of, and very often nightmares, too. A dream is quintessentially a reality when it is fulfilleantic painter, (but not sweet) – oh no. That's wrong. Dreams are what you're made of, and very often nightmares, too. In Melbourne the three Art Series Hotels are the John Olsen, Charles Blackman and the Adam Cullen.
The Cullen is in the CBD and features a number of original artworks and prints by Australian contemporary artist Adam Cullen. The Olsen - in Chapel Street, South Yarra - is filled with the lyrical works of revered Australian landscape artist Dr John Olsen. It has a breathtaking mural and sculpture greeting guests on arrival. At The Olsen Hotel, there is a spectacular glass bottom pool where you can see the Chapel Street shoppers below. Olsen is regarded as one of Australia's greatest living painters and won the Archibald Prize in 2005.
The Blackman is in St Kilda Road just outside Melbourne's CBD and built within and above the historic Airlie Mansion. It is a showcase for Charles Blackman's paintings.
Art curator Jane O'Neill will be conducting free art tours of the artwork in each hotel.
