Art and craft workshops (without the mess at home)
I'd love to do more art and craft activities with my children (aged two and four). I enjoy craft, and consider myself quite a creative person, but am never sure what activities to do with them. Some things I've tried have been too tricky, (leading to lots of frustration and toddler tantrums), and others much too messy! I was pretty excited when I discovered the Art Pack creative workshops for children 2-5 years old at Belconnen Arts Centre on Saturdays, 9:30-10:30am from 30 July - 12 September.
Who is running the workshops?: Workshops are run by tutor and visual artist, Hayley Lander (you will have met Hayley before if you've done craft at Tommy & Me Cafe)
What will kids make?:
Art Pack's theme this term is "Imaginary Garden". This 8 week workshop will focus on all things plants. Using drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and pottery, children will create an assortment of masterpieces inspired by plants and gardens.
Art Pack - creative workshops for 2-5 year-olds at Belconnen Arts Centre
Inspired by the colours and textures of Henri Matisse's Garden, kids will make a collage of colourful plants, and then a paper leaf bowl.
Week 2 - Creative Drawing with Nature: Using charcoal, ink and markers, children will explore the differences between observational and blind drawing. They will also use natural materials as drawing tools to create a variety of effects.
Week 3 - Mini Land Art: This week children will make a beautiful leaf mandala from a sensory table with lots of nature's objects to appreciate how other artists create Land Art.
Week 4 - Printing with Leaves: Leaves make a great medium for creating prints. In this session, children will create a printing block out of gelatine, exploring the possibilities of printing with leaves and playing with different shapes.
Week 5 - Embellishing Nature:
Paint, beads, pom poms and other embellishments will be used to adorn natural objects from the garden. Children will also make woven stick teepees and tell stories about their creations.
Week 6 - Exquisite Plant Collages: What is the weirdest plant you can create? Working individually and collaboratively this week, children will create their own unique plant species in the form of colourful collages and drawings.
Week 7 - Garden Treasures Bowl: Leaves, seedpods and other natural objects will be used to create impressions in clay. Children will also create their own pinch-pot out of air-dry clay to stash their garden treasures.
Week 8 - Imaginary Paper Plant Sculptures:
The last workshop session will use papier Mache, pipe cleaners, wire and card to make an imaginary landscape, complete with Dr. Seuss-inspired paper plants!
What do we need to bring?:
Old/dark coloured clothing suitable for messy play, or an apron, smock or large t-shirt to cover clothing. All art materials are supplied.
How much does the program cost?: $150 for 8 weeks, or $20 individual class.
